Burning Man 2010 Part 1

Three weeks ago I found myself in Black Rock City. Two years after my first Burning Man I was back for a second helping. Our preparations started last winter with a viewing of the Fritz Lang movie Metropolis which was also this year’s theme. We held several work parties to assemble a mutant vehicle before the event. I only managed to make two of them, but it helped me meet all but one of our 10 tribe members before the event. The leading wave of the tribe spent Sunday night in Cedarville, California. Just two hours after breakfast Monday morning we were on the playa:

Once again a storm came up before we had camp together. This time It was a fast moving rain storm, with lightning. We were in our North Pole party shade structure, supported by a 12 foot tall metal pole. It was a nervous couple moments as the storm rolled through. The smaller tent began leaking, so we huddled in the bigger tent:

Moments later we heard Black Rock City cheering loudly. It had to be a rainbow, we ran outside to find a double, some say triple rainbow:

We had to move quickly, this was not going to last long:

Our North Pole party shade structure survived the first storm:

Burning Man is work for the first couple hours as camp is set up. I feel like it really starts when I put the wallet, keys and ballcap away for the duration. Just after the storm and we are still in street clothes:

We had some rocking good light for the next half hour:

Our Neighbor had brought some art to burn later on:

Then it was time to get the bikes together and get out for our first look at the city:

Distracted by the light again:

Wow, the light just wouldn’t quit:

This was a good omen, much better light in the first hours than my entire first visit:

Just a random structure we saw on our ride in to see the man:

The man was closed the first evening. They were waiting for the neon folks to fix the lights:

We were up for about 22 hours the first day, so it was back to camp for some rest and help with the final assembly or our mutant vehicle, the Sistine Scaffold. Stay tuned for more. . .
