A ‘rainbow cloud’ formed to the skies south of Corvallis shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday. Kathie Dello, the associate director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State, said that isn’t what it’s called, however: Such a formation is an iridescent cloud. It usually happens when a cloud is developing and thin, with tiny droplets or ice crystals that let the light pass through. Science or not, the Corvallis residents who aimed their cell phone cameras at the sky agreed on the word to describe it: gorgeous.(Andy Cripe | Corvallis Gazette-Times)
